Jury awards patient $2.6M, rules surgeon at Pediatric & Young Adult Orthopaedics was 'negligent' — 5 insights

Orthopedics & Spine Review

A jury awarded $2.6 million to a woman, 19, who underwent surgery at Pediatric & Young Adult Orthopaedics in Chicago, according to law firm Corboy & Demetrio, the plaintiff's representation.

Five insights:

1. Prasad V. Gourineni, MD, performed hip surgery on the woman in 2012, when she was 13 years old.

2. After four hours of deliberation March 12, the jury found Dr. Gourineni was negligent because he didn't perform an MRI of the girl's knee or hip before surgery. The girl had complained of left knee pain.

3. The teen's hip joint was allegedly damaged during the surgery, and she later underwent a left hip replacement.

4. The teen experienced cartilage loss and could need three additional corrective surgeries, according to the plaintiff's attorney. The procedure allegedly damaged the girl's potential basketball career.

5. During the five-day trial, Dr. Gourieni's defense argued his diagnosis was correct and didn't cause the patient's cartilage loss and hip replacement.
