Innovation moves at a rapid pace in spine surgery, but hype and marketing around new technologies can sometimes get in front of the science, resulting in less than optimal outcomes for patients and significant steps backward for the technology.

A jury has awarded an $8.3 million verdict to the family of a woman who suffered brain damage during hip surgery because of an error with the anesthesia she was administered, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported April 6.

From multilevel disc replacements to artificial intelligence-based technologies and patient education initiatives, 10 spine surgeons from health systems and private practices across the country discussed the areas they believe would benefit most from innovation in spine care.

Management services organizations are gaining traction among physician-owned orthopedic practices as they continue to be challenged by economic, payer and administrative hurdles.

The opening of Centura Health's hospital under construction in Colorado Springs, Colo., has been delayed to July 2023 because of supply chain disruptions and related issues, The Gazette reported April 4.

Musculoskeletal management services organization Spire Orthopedic Partners has partnered with Peabody, Mass.-based Sports Medicine North and its Orthopedic Surgical Center of the North Shore. 

In the last five months, seven orthopedic surgeons, including two spine surgeons, have joined Gainesville, Fla.-based Orthopedic Care Partners, a management services organization with eight affiliate practices in four states, according to an April 4 news release.
