In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg canceled the popular New York City Marathon amid criticisms that the race would divert desperately needed resources away from hurricane-ravaged areas including Staten Island. In response, Dr. Metzl organized a group of marathon runners to “run” supplies to Staten Island residents along a 15-mile route.
“It is one of the most compelling things I’ve ever seen in my life,” Dr. Metzl said in the report. “Part of the myth of this whole thing was that runners were callous to the suffering and just wanted to run their marathon. Nothing could be further from the truth.”
