Preterm Birth May Not Impact Pain Later in Life

A literature review published in The Journal of Pain showed children born preterm have similar pain to those carried full term, including those who were exposed to the most invasive neonatal experiences.

Researchers examined pain perception among people who were born prematurely and compared them to people who were carried full term at an average of 17.8 years after birth. The people were asked to submerge their hand in ice water and complete a questionnaire about health complaints and pain issues.

The researchers found that 32 percent of the preterm subjects and 61 percent of the people born at term reached the 180 second ceiling time for the ice water immersion. People who were born preterm but spent a longer time on mechanical ventilation, experienced more pain events and had more morphine during the newborn period were less likely to withdraw their hand early.
