The center was rewarded for its initiative in seeking solutions for two crippling conditions.
The five-year grant began Sept. 1. Scientists will primarily investigate stem cell regulation in joint tissue and bone and how tissues respond after musculoskeletal injury.
The CORT grant will also fund initiatives using parathyroid hormone, an ingredient in the drug Forteo, to see how it can promote tissue and bone healing. The URMC orthopedics researchers believe they can demonstrate that PTH builds cartilage around joint and can activate stem cells for healing degenerating fractures.
