Dr. Michael Axe Presented With AOSSM’s Mr. Sports Medicine Award

Michael J. Axe, MD, of First State Orthopaedics in Newark, Del., was presented with the 2012 Robert E. Leach Mr. Sports Medicine Award during the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s annual meeting in Baltimore this weekend.

This award is given each year to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of sports medicine and includes a $5,000 donation to the winner’s charity of choice.

Dr. Axe received his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and followed this with an internship at Thomas Jefferson University and a surgical residency at the Medical Center of Delaware. He went on to do an orthopedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh and then an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the Hughston Clinic in Georgia. He also completed another orthopedic trauma fellowship at Harborview Hospital in Seattle.

He currently serves as the director for the All Sports Clinic of Delaware at First State Orthopaedics, where he is also a founding partner. Dr. Axe also serves as a clinical professor at the University of Delaware, medical director for the University of Delaware Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program and staff member for the Center for Biomedical Engineering Research. In addition, he is an active member of the teaching staff at the Medical Center of Delaware.
