Here are 15 orthopedic surgeons who have received honors or achieved leadership positions over the past few months.

Memphis Grizzlies team physician and chief of staff at Campbell Clinic Frederick M. Azar, MD, was named Physician of the Year by the National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association.

Executive vice chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery and director of the Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedic Center in Los Angeles William Warren Brien, MD, was elected to the 1st Century Bancsharers’ board of directors.

Missouri State Orthopaedic Association honored Michael Clarke, MD, of Clarke Orthopedic Clinic in Springfield, with the Distinguished Service Award.

Kenneth J. Dress, MD
, an orthopedic surgeon with Resurgens Orthopaedics in Atlanta received the E. Napier Burson Jr. MD Award from St. Joseph’s Hospital for his contributions to the art and science of medicine.

Cervical Spine Research Society named Michael Fehlins, MD, president.

Spine surgeon Gerard Girasole, MD, authored a book on treatment for back pain.

Pennsylvania-based hand surgeon Andrew W. Gurman, MD, was re-elected as speaker of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association.

Retired orthopedic surgeon and Vietnam veteran Robert Henrichsen, MD, received the lifetime achievement community healthcare award from the community of Auburn, Calif.

Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y., named Jan A. Koenig, MD, chief of joint replacement surgery and director of computer assisted robotic orthopedic surgery. He was previously director of orthopedic surgery and chief of arthritis and joint replacement surgery at Mercy Medical Center.

Madhavan Pisharodi, MD, a neurosurgeon and owner of Pisharodi Surgical Clinic in Brownville, Texas, was awarded the Malayalee Achievers Award from the World Malayalee Council for advancements in the field of spine surgery.

Baltimore orthopedic surgeon Lew C. Schon, MD, was named president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and will serve on the board of directors for the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Outreach & Education Fund. He is the director of foot and ankle services and the ankle fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.

Arthroscopy Association of North America named Nicholas A. Sgaglione, MD, president for 2012. Dr. Sgaglione is the chair of orthopedics at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

Spine surgeons Robert B. Winter, MD, and Vernon T. Tolo, MD, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Scoliosis Research Society.

Federation of Spine Associations named chief of the spine section at George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington D.C., Warren D. Yu, MD, president.
