DePuy Synthes has introduced AutoPlan, an automated surgical planning capability for its VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution for total knee arthroplasty, in the U.S.

The technology uses surgeons’ predefined alignment and balance parameters to generate kinematic alignment surgical plans, helping reduce manual adjustments. Surgeons can review, modify and approve the final plans, according to a Nov. 6 news release.

In a prospective study of 11 orthopedic surgeons under simulated operative conditions, AutoPlan reduced overall surgical planning workload by 44% and mental demand by 55% compared with manual planning. The technology also improved click efficiency by an average of 25%. The research was presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting.

Researchers also reported a 27% reduction in peak prefrontal cortex oxygenation and a 37% reduction in duration-dependent oxygenation, measures used to assess cognitive load.

DePuy Synthes has begun deploying AutoPlan at select U.S. sites, with broader commercial expansion expected through the first quarter of 2027.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
