The North American Spine Society has released coverage recommendations for growing rods used to treat pediatric scoliosis.
The recommendations provide evidence-based guidance for managing scoliosis in children and are not intended to apply to kyphosis treatment, according to an Oct. 29 news release shared with Becker’s.
The society said the recommendations aim to help insurers determine when coverage is appropriate for the treatment. Steven Hwang, MD, a member of the organization’s board of directors and coverage committee, said the guidance could help children who need growing rod constructs obtain coverage for care.
The recommendations are part of the society’s broader coverage guidance, which addresses more than 30 spine procedures, treatments and diagnostic services. Its coverage documents are used by government agencies, insurers, utilization management organizations, spine care providers and patients.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
