Secret Service Investigates Patient ID Theft at UPenn Health System

The Philadelphia Secret Service has entered into an investigation into the alleged theft of patient records from the University of Pennsylvania Health System, according to a report in the Philadelphia Daily News.

According to the report, 18 patient records were compromised, and the information was used to create bogus credit cards used for nearly $3,000 in purchases at a Sears in Upper Darby, Pa. The patients have been notified and have been offered help in settling credit issues as a result of the breach.

Shacoy McNish has been arrested for identity theft, and according to the report, there is no confirmation whether anyone at Penn Health had been fired as a result of alleged theft. Nineteen copies of medical records were found in Mr. McNish’s vehicle at the time of his arrest.
