Boston hospital launches neurosurgery department, names 1st chair

Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center appointed Gavin Dunn, MD, PhD, as inaugural chair of its new department of neurosurgery.

Dr. Dunn was also appointed neurosurgeon-in-chief at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, according to an Oct. 6 news release.

He most recently served as director of the Brain Tumor Immunology and Immunotherapy Program at Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital, where his clinical practice focused on patients with primary and metastatic brain cancers and general neurosurgical conditions.

Dr. Dunn is also a professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston and a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps. His research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, focuses on the immune response to brain tumors and central nervous system immunobiology.

The hospital also named Seth Karp, MD, chair of its Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Department of Surgery and of surgery at Dana-Farber; he most recently led surgical sciences at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center
