Cerapedics received Medicare new technology add-on payment status for its PearlMatrix P-15 Peptide Enhanced Bone Graft, effective Oct. 1.

The CMS designation applies to eligible Medicare beneficiaries receiving inpatient care at hospitals paid under the Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System, according to an Oct. 1 news release. For qualifying inpatient cases involving PearlMatrix, the approval allows for up to 65% reimbursement of the additional cost associated with the technology.

PearlMatrix is a Class III drug-device combination product for skeletally mature patients with degenerative disc disease in the lumbar spine. It is intended for use at one level in the lumbar spine, L2-S1, with up to Grade I spondylolisthesis.

In a Level 1 pivotal premarket approval study that included approximately 60% high-risk patients, more than twice as many patients achieved fusion at six months compared with those receiving local autograft alone. Higher fusion rates were sustained at 12 and 24 months.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
