Timothy Dooley, MD, of Reno, Nev.,-based Great Basin Orthopaedics, became the first surgeon in Northern Nevada to perform a joint replacement procedure using the Touch CMC 1 prosthesis.
The procedure is a treatment option for patients with arthritis at the base of the thumb, according to a September new release shared with Becker’s. Thumb carpometacarpal, or CMC, arthritis occurs when cartilage in the joint at the base of the thumb wears down, which can result in pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of grip strength.
The Touch CMC 1 prosthesis is a cementless, dual-mobility, ball-and-socket total joint replacement designed for the CMC joint. Its dual-mobility technology is designed to enhance joint stability.
The prosthesis is new to the United States and has been used in Europe over the past decade to treat thumb arthritis.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
