Lowell Weil Sr., DPM, founder of Mount Prospect, Ill.-based Weil Foot & Ankle Institute and a longtime leader in podiatric surgery, died Sept. 17. He was 85.
Dr. Weil opened his first medical office in Des Plaines, Ill., in 1965 and founded Weil Foot & Ankle Institute, where he practiced until his retirement in 2018. He also served as president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons from 1993-1994 and as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery.
During his career, Dr. Weil launched one of the first podiatric surgical fellowship programs and served as residency director at Kindred Hospital Chicago Northlake (Ill.). He held multiple patents for surgical implants and developed surgical techniques and instruments used in foot and ankle surgery.
Dr. Weil also spent 25 years as team podiatrist for the NFL’s Chicago Bears and the MLB’s Chicago White Sox. He supported the 1980 U.S. Women’s Olympic Gymnastics Team and consulted for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls. Dr. Weil lectured in 41 countries during his career.
