Ishan Patel, MD, a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota’s Adult Reconstructive Fellowship, was declared missing after catastrophic flooding in Nepal.
Dr. Patel traveled to Nepal with his wife, Akansha Patel, his mother, Shilpa Patel, and his father-in-law, Umesh Kumar, on a pilgrimage after his graduation, according to a Facebook post from the University of Minnesota’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
According to available information cited by the department, Dr. Patel and his family were likely at their hotel when flooding occurred and swept the hotel away.
The Associated Press reported Sept. 7 that more than 1,300 people had died in Nepal and Tibet, while about 5,000 others remained missing, according to Nepal’s disaster management agency.
“This situation continues to evolve, and recovery efforts in the region are ongoing,” the university department said. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Dr. Patel, his family, and all those affected by this tragedy.”
