University of Chicago Medicine established a Section of Computational Neurosurgery Sept. 1 to combine neurosurgery, AI and data science in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disease.
The section, which UChicago Medicine said is the first of its kind in the nation, is led by Antonio Porras, PhD, as scientific director and Rohaid Ali, MD, as clinical director, according to a Sept. 1 news release.
The section will focus on AI, machine learning, medical image computing and predictive modeling across neurosurgical care, including diagnosis, treatment planning, surgery and long-term outcomes.
The section will also collaborate with researchers across the University of Chicago. The university’s Center for Translational Data Science operates a data ecosystem comprising 17 data commons and meshes with more than 27 petabytes of data from nearly 2.4 million patients.
