Gerald Steinberg, MD, an orthopedic surgeon who held leadership roles at Amherst-based University of Massachusetts and Cambridge (Mass.) Health Alliance, died Aug. 25 at 83.
Dr. Steinberg began his orthopedic career at UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., where he practiced clinically, taught as a professor of orthopedic surgery and served as chair of the Department of Orthopedics, according to his obituary. He later served as chief quality officer and chief medical officer and helped lead the merger of UMass Medical Center and Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Steinberg joined Cambridge Health Alliance in 2005 as its initial senior medical quality officer and became CMO in 2010. He later served as senior vice president and chief network development officer.
“It is nearly impossible to measure Jerry’s impact at CHA, where his warmth, compassion, clinical excellence, and generosity of spirit helped shape the trajectory of this organization for the past two decades,” Cambridge Health Alliance CEO Assaad Sayah, MD, wrote in a letter to health system colleague that was published with his obituary. “His commitment to put our patients and communities first is at the heart of everything we do, and he will be deeply missed.”
