Gunnar Andersson, MD, PhD, a longtime orthopedic surgery leader and founding member of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, has died.
Dr. Andersson joined Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center in 1985 and served as chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery from 1994 to 2008. He later served as the department’s chairman emeritus.
Dr. Andersson served as ISSLS president in 1989, hosted its 1992 Annual Meeting in Chicago and received the ISSLS Wiltse Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. He also chaired the organization’s Prize Committee for many years.
His research focused on spine science, including disc degeneration, epidemiology and occupational biomechanics. He authored over 260 original publications, over 160 books and book chapters and over 440 abstracts.
Dr. Andersson also served as president of the Orthopaedic Research Society. He served as president of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery from 2014 to 2015 and co-president the following year.
