Baltimore-based Mercy Medical Center opened a 3,728-square-foot research and education facility focused on foot and ankle care.
The Center for Orthopedic Innovation has three specialized laboratory suites and dedicated office space, creating an environment where surgeons, researchers, fellows, residents and industry partners collaborate, according to an Aug. 10 news release.
The center includes the Orthobiologic Lab, which focuses on cell culture and molecular biology, and a tissue processing room that houses Mercy’s institutional review board-approved tissue bank for foot and ankle disorders. It also has an anatomy laboratory designed to replicate an operating room environment.
The facility was developed through a seven-year effort led by Lew Schon, MD, director of orthopedic innovation at Mercy’s Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction. The center will support research into biologic therapies, implants and surgical techniques, as well as physician education and training.
