Frank Frassica, MD, a former director of the department of orthopedic surgery at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University, died July 25 at age 73.
Dr. Frassica left the Navy in 1992 and joined Johns Hopkins, where he rose to professor of orthopedic surgery and oncology and spent 11 years as director of the department. He specialized in bone and soft tissue tumors and authored more than 175 peer-reviewed articles and three books.
Dr. Frassica retired from Johns Hopkins in 2014 and joined Columbia, Md.-based MedStar Health. He was also past president of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and general secretary of the Limb Salvage Society.
Before entering academia, Dr. Frassica served in the U.S. Navy. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency and orthopedic oncology fellowship at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and later served as chief of orthopedic surgery at Fleet Hospital Five, a deployable Navy medical facility, during the Gulf War.
Dr. Frassica received teaching honors at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Hospital and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, along with Portsmouth (Va.) Naval Hospital and Mayo Clinic, where he was named Teacher of Decade.
