UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco has opened an eight-bed Children’s Neuroscience Specialty Unit, expanding its inpatient capacity for children with neurologic and neurosurgical conditions.

The unit is the hospital’s first inpatient expansion since it opened in 2015. It provides year-round care for children with conditions including epilepsy, stroke, headaches and neuroinflammatory diseases. About one in five pediatric inpatients at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals receives care related to a neurologic condition, according to a July 21 news release.

The unit is located near the hospital’s emergency department and imaging services and features private rooms equipped with integrated video EEG capabilities. It supports seven-day admissions for both emergency and elective patients and is staffed by a multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric hospitalists, neurohospitalists, neurosurgeons, epilepsy specialists, headache specialists, nurses and allied health professionals.

The project was supported by funding from California Proposition 4, the 2018 statewide bond measure that provides grants for construction, expansion and renovation projects at qualifying children’s hospitals.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
