NIH appoints neurosurgeon as international research chief

National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya, MD, selected Steven Schiff, MD, PhD, as director of the Fogarty International Center and NIH associate director for international research. Dr. Schiff began the role June 4.

Dr. Schiff previously served as the Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Neurosurgery, vice chair for global health in the Department of Neurosurgery and professor of epidemiology and of electrical and computer engineering at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., according to a June 4 news release.

As director, he will oversee NIH’s global health research efforts, including international research collaborations, partnerships and scientist training programs. He will also oversee the center’s approximately $95 million annual budget.

Dr. Schiff has authored nearly 250 scientific publications and founded the Center for Neural Engineering at University Park, Pa.-based Penn State University. He also helped develop the Center for Global Neurosurgery at Yale.

His research led to the identification of neonatal paenibacilliosis, a severe infant brain infection caused most commonly by Paenibacillus thiaminolyticus. He received NIH Director’s Pioneer and Transformative Awards in 2015 and 2018, respectively.
