Brian Cole, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and managing partner with Chicago-based Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush.

He’s a prolific researcher and earned the 2025 Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Clinical Research Award in 2025. He was recognized for his 25 years of work to advance osteochondral allograft transplantation for cartilage and bone defects. Dr. Cole also has more than 1,000 published articles and 10 textbooks.

Dr. Cole has a particular interest in orthobiologics and its growing role in orthopedics.

“One of our next initiatives is to capture virtually every patient who undergoes non-surgical symptom modifying treatment with the use of orthobiologics in the office setting,” he told Becker’s. “The literature often does not include an analysis or characterization of the substance that we are injecting.  Having this information and understanding its correlation to patient reported outcomes might help us to nearly customize how we think about the use of orthobiologics in the future. This multi-center initiative (the BARB), centered at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, involves up to 10 centers and will truly further our ability to provide predicable care and outcomes for our patients with greater precision. “

Dr. Cole is speaking at Becker’s 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, set for June 11-13 at the Swissotel Chicago.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
