HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center in Phoenix has added awake spine surgery, according to a May 4 feature from the health system.

Surgeons with the hospital used awake spine surgery for an L4-L5 transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion. They used spinal anesthesia and sedation without intubation.

“This is a complicated procedure that requires excellent teamwork,” Rory Murphy, MD, an affiliated member of the HonorHealth Medical Staff, said in the feature. “There is constant communication between the surgeon, anesthesia team and operating room staff to make sure the patient stays comfortable and everything runs smoothly.”

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
