Thomas Byrd, MD, is set to perform hip surgery on Ryan Pepiot, a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, in Nashville, Tenn., on May 13.
Mr. Pepiot has not pitched in a MLB game this year due to inflammation in his right hip. He underwent an MRI and three different X-rays on his right hip last week, according to a May 1 report from mlb.com.
The surgery will cause Mr. Pepiot to miss the rest of the 2026 MLB season, but is expected to make a full recovery by the start of the 2027 season.
Dr. Byrd is an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon and hip specialist at the Nashville Hip Institute. He is a recent past president of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy and the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and also serves as a team physician for the Tennessee Titans.
