Orthopedics is one of the highest-paid physician specialties and compensation has increased significantly in recent years.
Five things to know:
1. Orthopedic surgeons saw the highest average compensation of all specialties surveyed for Medscape’s 2026 Physician Compensation Report. Orthopedic pay on average was $611,000.
2. Average orthopedic pay has jumped more than $50,000 over the years since 2022, according to annual Medscape reports. In 2025 the average pay was $564,000, and in 2024 that figure was $558,000.
3. Orthopedic pay saw one of the higher increases year over year at 8%. The average physician compensation for all specialties rose on average 3%.
4. Orthopedic surgeons’ compensation shares mostly relies on productivity, according to the American Medical Association’s “AMA Policy Research Perspectives Report.”
5. Orthopedics is among one of the wealthiest specialties, according to Medscape’s “Physician Wealth & Debt Report 2026.” Orthopedics and radiology were among the richest specialties with 39% of physicians in the $5 million or more wealth tier.
