Dr. Stein made his first trip to Bhutan in 1990 and found several patients with severe disease but no native orthopedic surgeons. Since then, Dr. Stein has returned to Bhutan several times to treat patients and train physicians. Now, the country has five orthopedic surgeons available for patients.
Dr. Stein has served as program director for the Health Volunteers Overseas Bhutan trip and on the board of Orthopaedics Overseas. He accepted the Golden Apple award in Washington, D.C.
