Phoenix-based HonorHealth Sonoran Crossing Medical Center has performed the nation’s first joint replacement using Stryker’s new Mako RPS handheld robotic system.
Orthopedic surgeon Doug Werner, MD, led the procedure, which aims to improve implant alignment while reducing infection risk and time under anesthesia. Unlike traditional robotic systems, the new handheld device eliminates the need for preoperative radiation, according to a February Linkedin post from the health system.
The robotic system allows surgeons to personalize joint replacement procedures with greater precision and flexibility.
The procedure marks an early U.S. use of the Mako RPS platform, which combines image-free planning and handheld navigation to guide implant placement.
