Orlando (Fla.) Health has unveiled a pilot study of “SafeSplint,” a wrist and hand splint invented by orthopedic surgeon Jeffrey Deren, MD, to improve outcomes after upper extremity injuries.
The patented device features hinges, air bladders and adjustable straps to ensure proper joint immobilization and positioning. It is currently being trialed in several Orlando Health emergency departments and an orthopedic walk-in clinic, with plans for broader distribution, according to a Feb. 26 news release shared with Becker’s.
Dr. Deren partnered with Orlando Health Strategic Innovations and its FDA-registered subsidiary, Aparata Medical, to develop and commercialize the device. The design aims to reduce complications caused by improperly applied splints in emergency and urgent care settings.
