Baseball Player Jose Martinez Returns After Meniscus Transplant

Jose Martinez, a minor league baseball player in the Chicago White Sox farm system, has become the first baseball player to return to play after undergoing a meniscus transplant, which was performed in 2009.

Brian Cole, MD, chairman of the Cartilage Transplant Center at Rush, performed the procedures. He was involved in the development of the specialized instruments and techniques for the procedure.

Mr. Martinez had previously undergone several menisci repairs prior to the transplant. After the procedure, Mr. Martinez underwent extensive rehabilitation before returning to the team.
