Dr. Philip Louie builds online spine imaging resource

There are several spine measurements to know in spine care and research, but Philip Louie, MD, said he’s never seen any centralized place for physicians to fully understand them. So he said he built that himself with a new website, SpineBase.

SpineBase is in its early version, according to a Feb. 1 LinkedIn post. It covers the full spectrum of spine measurements including a description, instructions on how to measure and normal vs. pathologic ranges. Each entry is also backed by references from multiple journal articles.

Dr. Louie said he’s seen similar resources from orthopedic-focused companies, and he wanted to create something to address the nuances of the spine.

“My hope is that this becomes a learning tool for a lot of different spine relate activities,” Dr. Louie told Becker’s. “The feedback that we’ve gotten so far has been a lot of fun. People are asking things like ‘Can you add this tool?’ or ‘Can you add a section drawing in information for recent spine papers?’ It’s becoming like a hub for spine education as a whole.”

Dr. Louie is spearheading the website on his own, but in the near future he said he hopes to bring in more physician and institution collaborators.
