A pedicle screw from Medtronic’s Voyager spinal implants fractured inside a man’s body after he had spinal fusion surgery, according to a product liability lawsuit filed Jan. 20 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida.
The man had a spinal fusion in February 2020 with Medtronic Voyager pedicle screws, and follow-up imaging showed one of the screws fractured. He had another surgery to remove the fractured hardware in January 2022 but imaging eight months later showed the new screw also broke.
The man had another surgery related to the hardware issues. His lawsuit alleges that the pedicle screws were prone to fracturing and “unreasonably dangerous,” leading to injuries.
The lawsuit was first filed in Leon County Circuit Court and later moved to District Court, AboutLawsuits reported. The patient is asking for damages of at least $50,000 and a trial by jury.
Medtronic did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Becker’s. This article will be updated if they do.
