Rancho Mirage, Calif.-based Empire Vein & Vascular Specialists is now offering genicular artery embolization as a noninvasive alternative to knee replacement surgery for patients with osteoarthritis.
The outpatient procedure is designed to reduce inflammation and arthritis-related knee pain by limiting abnormal blood flow to affected areas. The treatment does not involve general anesthesia, incisions or joint replacement, and most patients are able to resume normal activity shortly after the procedure, according to a Jan. 15 news release from Empire Vein & Vascular Specialists.
Genicular artery embolization is covered by Medicare and several commercial insurance plans, including PPOs and Inland Empire Health Plan, the release said.
