Orthopedic surgeons at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika are using handheld navigation technology to increase precision during total joint replacements.

The device, OrthAlign Lantern, provides real-time guidance to personalize implant placement based on each patient’s anatomy. The system aims to improve alignment, reduce blood loss and lower the need for additional imaging, according to a Jan. 7 news release.

East Alabama Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine surgeons are using the tool to guide procedures with greater accuracy, which may support smoother recoveries and better long-term outcomes.

More than 1 million Americans undergo joint replacement each year, according to the release.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
