USA Health System’s Spine Institute in Mobile, Ala., is the first facility in a six-state region to use 3D-printed cervical spine implants, according to a Dec. 16 news release.
Richard Menger, MD, chief of complex spine surgery, performed the first case using the technology. Fewer than 75 tailored cervical spine implants have been used nationwide.
The implant was designed with imaging tailored to the patient’s anatomy and is made for improved fit and alignment.
“Being able to provide a 3D-printed, patient-specific cervical spine implant is a game-changer for patients in our region,” Dr. Menger said in the release. “It’s exciting to see how innovation can directly improve patient care here at USA Health.”
The milestone case is the first to be completed in a six-state area that includes South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
