Johnson & Johnson is planning to separate its orthopedic business, which will operate as DePuy Synthes, according to an Oct. 14 news release.

Namal Nawana, former executive chair and founder of Sapphiros, will be worldwide president of DePuy Synthes. Johnson & Johnson is separating DePuy Synthes to shift its operational focus.

“This transaction enables Johnson & Johnson to further strengthen its focus and investment toward higher-growth areas where we can meaningfully extend and improve patient lives,” Johnson & Johnson CEO Joaquin Duato said in the release. “The planned separation reflects our long-standing commitment to portfolio optimization and value creation. We are confident that our Orthopaedics business will be better positioned to improve top-line growth and operating margins as a standalone business.”

Separation of DePuy Synthes is expected to be completed within 18 to 24 months.
