The advocates will urge Congress to appropriate $535.6 million for the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases for fiscal year 2013 as well as maintain static levels of funding for the National Institutes of Health.

According to the report, musculoskeletal diseases and disorders cost the U.S. economy around $850 billion annually and represent 8 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. The event allows patients to tell their stories and promote further research.
