Mr. Brown, age 75, said a 20 percent level is “inappropriate” today and would be difficult considering the economic climate.
In 2008, earnings increased by 12.8 percent and Stryker is forecasting a 2-6 percent growth for 2009.
Mr. Brown was Stryker’s CEO from 1977 through 2004 and recently announced he would exit the chairmanship at year’s end.
