Joe Congeni, MD, a leader in the pediatric sports medicine field, retired Aug. 1.
Dr. Congeni practiced for more than four decades, including nearly 40 years as director of sports medicine at Akron Children’s Hospital, according to a July 19 news release from Akron Children’s.
During his tenure at Akron Children’s Dr. Congeni developed the Primary Care Pediatrics Sports Medicine Fellowship at Akron Children’s, the first of its kind at a pediatric hospital in the U.S.
In addition, he wrote 19 scientific papers and chapters and was involved with 21 research projects during his career.
Dr. Congeni will have the title emeritus director of sports medicine in retirement, the release said.
