Indiana surgeon completes state’s 1st augmented reality shoulder replacement

Brian Badman, MD, a board-certified, fellowship-trained shoulder surgeon at Muncie-based Central Indiana Orthopedics, has performed Indiana’s first augmented reality-assisted shoulder replacement using the ARVIS shoulder system. The procedure was completed July 28 at the practice’s outpatient surgery center in Fishers, according to an Aug. 4 news release.

Enovis’ ARVIS, or Augmented Reality Visual and Information System, uses a headset to provide surgeons with real-time visual guidance, eliminating the need for bulky equipment or preoperative CT scans. The technology is designed to improve implant accuracy, streamline procedures and enhance surgical focus, the release said.

Central Indiana Orthopedics said the milestone builds on its history of adopting advanced surgical technology, including its early use of Mako SmartRobotics for hip and knee replacements.
