Keith Meister, MD, is likely to perform elbow surgery on Carson Spiers, a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds.
Dr. Meister provided a second opinion on Mr. Spiers’ MRI, determining that surgery is needed to repair his right ulnar collateral ligament, according to a July 26 news release from the team.
Mr. Spiers has been on the injured list since April 20 with a right shoulder impingement. During a game on a rehab assignment he felt soreness in his right biceps.
The type of surgery is not yet decided, but it will either be a full ulnar collateral ligament replacement or an internal brace procedure.
The timetable for Mr. Spiers’ return to action will likely be late into the 2026 MLB season, the release said.
Dr. Meister is the director at TMI Sports Medicine in Arlington, Texas, and is the head team physician for the Texas Rangers.
