Thomas Belknap, MD, performed Northside Hospital Forsyth’s first ultra-minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgery, according to a July 21 news release.
Dr. Belknap on June 20 performed a lumbar spine endoscopic microdiscectomy with Arthrex’s spine tools. He used a small incision and a pencil-sized endoscope to access the spine without disrupting surrounding tissues.
“Data has shown that endoscopic spine surgery can have equivalent results to traditional open spine surgeries,” Dr. Belknap, a neurosurgeon at the Cumming, Ga.-based hospital, said in the release. “Incisions are typically about a centimeter in size. While not every patient or pathology can be treated this way, indications will continue to expand in the future.”
