Denver Broncos safety P.J. Locke announced that he had spinal fusion after the team’s Jan. 12 playoff game with the Buffalo Bills, NBC Sports reported July 2.

Chad Prusmack, MD, performed the surgery to address degenerated discs at L4 and L5, the report said. According to a video on Mr. Locke’s YouTube channel, he is one of the first NFL players to have a spinal fusion and he may be the first to return to football following the surgery.

Five months after surgery, Mr. Locke said he has “no pain levels,” the report said. He didn’t participate in the team’s offseason program but is expected to compete for safety snaps after the Broncos signed Talanoa Hufanga.
