Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Hospital has added the first FDA-cleared, mixed-reality navigation system for total hip replacements, according to a June 25 report from South Florida Hospital News.

Orthopedic surgeon Edward Stolarski, MD, was the first to use HipInsight’s mixed-reality platform, cleared by the FDA in 2024.

The platform can be used hand-in-hand with Microsoft HoloLens 2 mixed-reality glasses to overlay 3D holograms of a patients’ anatomy during hip surgery.

It helps surgeons to improve surgical accuracy and anticipate any potential complications by creating implants specific to each patient’s anatomy.

Dr. Stolarksi has now used the system in more than 100 hip replacements. He also uses the Insight system with CT scans before surgery to develop a 3D surgical plan
