University Orthopedics’ surgeon 1st in state to perform Stryker partial shoulder replacement

East Providence, R.I.-based University Orthopedics’ orthopedic surgeon E. Scott Paxton, MD, has become first in the state to perform a partial shoulder replacement using Stryker’s Tornier pyrocarbon humeral head.

The device was recently cleared by the FDA, and benefits younger patients seeking a return to active lifestyles who do not want to undergo total shoulder replacement, according to a Feb. 27 news release sent to Becker’s.

The first procedure was performed at University Orthopedics’ East Bay Surgical Center in April. Dr. Paxton has performed several more to date.

Stryker’s Tornier pyrocarbon humeral head is the only pyrocarbon implant cleared for shoulder hemiarthroplasty in the U.S. It was first cleared by the FDA at the end of 2022.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
