Gender distribution in lumbar, cervical spine patients: Report

Lumbar spine cases saw an overall distribution of male and female patients across all ages, while cervical spine cases had some small variances, according to the American Spine Surgery 2025 Annual Report.

The report included 230,061 lumbar spine cases and 112,611 cervical spine cases from 2015 to 2023. The report measured the percentage of male and female patients across seven age brackets.

Male: 52.7%

Female: 47.3%

30-39

Male: 49.5%

Female: 50.5%

40-49

Male: 50%

Female: 50%

50-59

Male: 52%

Female: 48%

60-69

Male: 51.2%

Female: 48.8%

70-79

Male: 51.8%

Female: 48.3%

80 and older

Male: 52.6%

Female: 47.4%

 

Cervical spine cases:

Male: 54.1%

Female: 45.9%

Male: 48.4%

Female: 51.6%
