While ACL tears are common among professional and college-level athletes, they are now on the rise among elementary-age children as well. Dr. Kocher suggests this trend is the result of children playing at a higher and more competitive level at younger ages than before.

At Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, ACL tears in children increased by 400 percent in the past decade to an average of 135 injuries annually, according to the report.
