The center was founded in 1988 partially funded by surcharges from Kentucky traffic tickets and the Bucks for Brains program. The center has also accepted private contributions.

This year, researchers at the center partnered with other facilities to report results of implanting electrical stimulators into paraplegic patients to provide continuous electrical impulses to the spinal cord, which allowed a patient to stand without help, move his legs voluntarily and take a few steps, according to the report.

UofL and the partnering Frazier Rehab Institute researchers also received funding from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research to establish the Spinal Cord Injury Model System.
