The program’s goal is to pioneer a new limb replacement technique without using anti-rejection drugs that could threaten a patient’s life. The surgeons instead transplant donor bone marrow along with the patient’s hand so the immune system will accept the donated hand.

The surgeons will also use sensitive immune monitoring techniques to minimize the drugs patients need during the procedure.
