The study looked at 18 women with fibromyalgia who had been taking medication. Women received brain scans and memory tests before the study began, after being off medication for six weeks and after exercising with a personal trainer three times a week for six weeks.
After stopping medication, women had more pain and memory problems, but after the exercise regimen, the women had less pain and memory returned to their original levels. Researchers also found a decrease in brain activity in the areas that process pain and memory, meaning the brain was functioning more efficiently.
